Following the good response of "The Early Learning" & "Moscow State Circus", he went on to release his eponymous debut album, Eugene McGuinness, under the Domino label on 13th October 2008. Different from the previous, "Eugene McGuinness" is a full-length album with twelve tracks.

The album received mixed reviews from critics. With Pitchfork saying a lack of progress in his songwriting, while BBC said the album "runs the formative gamut of angsty, carefree, happy-sad, hormone-fuelled, late-teens emotions", clashing up with "busily eclectic but can make no great claims to originality" from The Observer.
